Living life by straying from the path
When you tell a story, it is often best to start at the beginning.
My parents had other plans the day I was born. Food was prepared, and family was en route for a Sunday dinner. I guess so was I.
They left a note on the door and spent the rest of the evening and following morning at the hospital. No real surprises or complications, I just took my time. I made two new parents that day in 1986. And a pretty good way to start a story.
Fast forward eighteen years later, I was shaking. My paper was held to the podium with both hands, and I kept trying to blink wetness into my dry eyes. I had never given a Valedictorian speech before. A lot had happened up to that point, but, nothing unusual.
I did what most people do. Made friends, played games, drove around, and discovered things like love and heartbreak. I finished high school on that stage and moved on. Once I stepped down I could see again.
