About Me — Jason Vu Nguyen
Know Thy Self? What I’ve sort of figured out so far.
Hey everyone! My name is Jason Vu Nguyen. Jason is my English name. Vu is my Vietnamese name. And yes, I have a very common Vietnamese surname. Depending on who I introduce myself to, I will either pronounce it as “win” or “nuh-guy-yen”.
I am a 29-year-old British born Vietnamese. I grew up in Birmingham for the first 18 years of my life. I moved to London to go to university. After graduating I struggled to stay in one place, always yearning to travel here, there and everywhere.
I’ve come to accept that I may be nomadic in nature. I pass by different groups of friends and places, I cherish it but never stay attached.
Who Am I?
My mom is a tiger mom. For those of you who don’t know what a tiger mom is, it’s a strict form of parenting, motivated by love, using coercive tactics, to make us fall in line and achieve their definition of success. High academic goals were set. Extra tutoring lessons six days a week. My career, all planned out for me. My mother would relentlessly drive me to live up to her expectations.
Unlucky for her, I had too much natural curiosity about life. We all know that one annoying child who always asks “but why?”, that’s me. I would question her motivations…
