How do you boil down over forty years of life into a short story? How do you choose what’s important or interesting enough for others to know and what to omit as mundane? Decisions, decisions.
I don’t want to start at the very beginning — I think I was an entirely different person before I was ten and moved with my parents to the United States. I was outgoing, carefree, confident, all things that took a turn in 1992. To say that I had a difficult time coping with the move would be an understatement. I didn’t speak English, I wore clothes that were considered weird and old-fashioned, and I was thrust into the cruelest, least accepting phase of mandatory education — junior high school. There were a lot of tears and a lot of anxiety, something that I had not known before, but that became the defining characteristic of my life since.
But that was also when I started writing. That move that flipped everything on its head, that made me feel like so much of an outsider and left me feeling alone also started me on the path to becoming an author.
