“Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I was born in Atlanta, Georgia at Emory University Hospital (pay attention to that…it’ll come back round in my story) and raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia. My Dad, Mom, and two sisters all lived a simple small town life. I guess back then it was considered a suburb of Atlanta, but it felt like it was forever away. In fact, growing up in the Stone Mountain Village you would drive your car over the trolley tracks from the late 1800s when you went through the five points intersection of Silver Hill Road, Memorial Drive, and Main Street.
It was a great place to grow up! We lived a short walk through some woods from Stone Mountain Elementary where we would play on the playground and in my teens battled in basketball on the blacktop court. We rode our bikes to Stone Mountain Park and walked up the mountain, explored the many quarry sites and ponds in the park, and generally tried to stay out of trouble. Sometimes we were successful. The goal was really to stay out and play until you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face any longer because of darkness. It was a very “The Sandlot” and “Stand By Me” existence; two v two football amongst the headstones in Stone Mountain Cemetery, flashlight tag, capture the flag, king of the hill, dozens…
