About Me — Kaila Martinez
1) Write about yourself [check]; 2) Make it snazzy [check]
Elevator pitches are still not my strong suit. I’m constantly torn between “don’t say too much” and “don’t say too little” which accurately reflects the mental strain I put on myself with any life decision.
So anyways, about me:
I’m 25 years old and currently call New York City my home. But this is quite a recent development, so don’t hold me to that New Yorker status just yet. My identity is still Californian as I was born and raised in San Diego. Yes, we say dude a lot and the sun is always shining.
Right now I'm in the sweet spot of student status, so it’s socially acceptable that my life is in constant flux. I’m in a graduate program for Public History and I received my BA in History from UCSB. I’m determined to show the citizens of the world that they do in fact love history, they just don’t know it yet.
I’m working on not taking life too seriously, which isn’t always easy. But I’m slowly coming to grips with the fact that with 7+ billion people in the world, it’s ridiculous to be so tied up in one perspective. I also like to keep life pretty casual because I’ve realized the moment I try to put on a persona, I trip up on my words and make a fool of myself anyways.
I’ve experimented with my fair share of hobbies and pastimes, but the ones that currently occupy my days are taking walks around town, doing yoga, and reading obsessively. I also really enjoy sweets, but that’s not an acceptable hobby unless I insert it into the euphemistic frame “I enjoy trying new foods,” which, in fact, I do.
If I were to generalize the topics I enjoy writing about, I suppose it boils down to mindfulness, self-improvement, and philosophy. These topics encompass how I experiment with the way I view the world, which is usually influenced by whatever book I’m currently reading. Oh, I write about those to — my takeaways from books that is.
Writing has always been a therapeutic activity for me. I’ve never been able to draw and I actually love the shape of letters, so I guess putting letters together into words and then sentences was the next natural step. Aside from Medium, I journal often and I write poetry from time to time.
As I say in my bio, I use writing as a way to live intentionally, think critically, and connect with others. So in terms of my writing goals, first and foremost I hope to find a community of thinkers — not necessarily people who hold my same views, but individuals who are open minded and also like to challenge themselves. From there, I have other expectations, but in an effort to not jinx myself, I will leave it at that.
Thanks for indulging me!
