I Help You Level Up Your Data Science Game. Here’s How!

Two years ago, I kickstarted my data science career in Tech when I joined what I believe to be the coolest company out there — Spotify ✨

don’t mind my nasty-looking shoes

Don’t worry, I’m not here to brag about my achievement. But rather, I want to be of some help.

A few months ago, I made 2 realizations:

  1. I was one of the few lucky souls to be working in Tech and even more so at Spotify.
  2. I was one of the very few junior Data Scientists working in Tech.

The Tech industry has had a longstanding history of mostly hiring experts. However, this is no longer the case.

They have opened their doors to the rest of us striving to become accomplished data scientists one day. And I happen to be one of those who got through that door.

How did I make these realizations?

Aspiring Data Scientists reach out to me every day on LinkedIn hoping to peak into how this role actually translates for juniors in Tech.

I realized that being only one step ahead puts me in the best possible spot to share what it’s like to be a Data Scientist from the fresh eyes of a newbie.

However, I just can’t afford to exchange with each person who reaches out to me on LinkedIn. That would be a full-time job in itself, which is why I’m here on Medium!

So what’s the deal?

Very simple. Information out there about what it’s like to work in Tech from the fresh eyes of a Junior is almost non-existent. There is already so much content about data science, so I’m not here to recycle the same old stories. If I do, be sure that I’m doing my best to offer you my POV of a Junior DS.
So I have 2 goals:

  1. Support other aspiring Data Scientists in their own journey, like many others have been guiding me in my own. How? By sharing personal stories, detailing my ongoing journey as a junior DS, and all the lessons that I’m learning while they’re still fresh in my mind.
  2. Write data science content that will not bore and torture you to death. I hope you find my writing engaging enough for you to want to keep on reading.

Why am I even doing this?

Because now I finally can and I think that’s amazing!

In only two years, the list of learnings I’ve picked up along the road has started to stretch longer than the wall of China. So I figured it’s only fair to share them with whoever needs to hear this right now.

The experience of working at Spotify has been incredibly invaluable in teaching me what it means to be a Data Scientist in a Tech-driven world.

Over time, I quickly realized that college had given me a great technical head start. But some core skills are just taught when you get thrown out there and get your hands dirty.

Where?

My personal profile.

For Data Science content, you can also find me on the coolest Tech publication out there — Towards Data Science, where else?

I spent my uni years pulling all-nighters cramming ML concepts and coding tutorials on their articles. I still do (minus the all-nighters).

So I’m thrilled to finally be in a position to contribute in my turn. Helping others smooth-sail through their own journey is an amazing opportunity to do something meaningful, which is what I want in my life.

Okay maybe I am bragging a little bit after all, but that’s TDS!! Anyone in DS knows it’s a big deal.

Who am I?

A 26 yo girl from Morocco, currently inhabiting the dreamy land of Paris.
A few facts about me:

  1. My name means eternity in Arabic, so be sure you won’t get rid of me so easily. Others have tried. They failed.
  2. I lived in 4 continents
→ Morocco (Africa): I grew up there and did my bachelor's
→ Malaysia (Asia): I went on exchange & lived my utter best life
→ NYC (America): I pursued my MSc in Urban Data Science @ NYU
→ France (Europe): I pursued my 2nd MSc in DS & currently live in Paris
  3. I started to play the violin almost 10 years ago but I still sound like a 10 yo playing. Not those ling-ling 10 yo geniuses, the other ones…
  4. I speak 3.5 languages — English, French & Arabic, and I can manage in Spanish (I currently have a 75 days streak on Duolingo, my proudest feat and only successful attempt at discipline).
  5. I’m obsessed with Socionics, aka the psychology of personality types. One of my goals is to share everything I learned over the past 2 years on the topic. Trust me, I learned a lot. Oh, and I’m an ENTP for those wondering.
  6. I love history. I can spend hours on Wikipedia, jumping from one page to another learning random facts about random events, and random people. Don’t worry, I also read history books too.
  7. My favorite TV show is ‘Outlander’.
  8. I am obsessed with Kurzgesagt on YouTube.
  9. I love cycling, it’s the only sport I can enjoy.
  10. I almost never finish the books that I read for some reason.
  11. I love Hans Zimmer. I went to his Live concert recently and sobbed like a little girl for half of the show.
  12. My favorite director is Tim Burton, I love how dark, twisted, and fantastically creative his world is.
Ridicule never killed anyone. Being too serious did, at least that’s what the Joker told me
