About Me — Krista Schumacher
A Gen X writer making sense of the past, one true story at a time
Hello! I’m Krista. Thank you for taking a few minutes to learn about me.
I started writing on Medium in 2019 and had a great run for about seven months before life took over. The demands of my new position as an adjunct professor of public health, along with my job as a rural health researcher and coursework in the creative nonfiction program at UCLA Extension, became too much.
But now I’ve got my CNF certificate and courses that mostly run themselves, so I’m back, and very glad to be here. I forgot how much I enjoy this space.
How I got here
Originally from Oklahoma City, I now live in the rolling green hills of northeastern Oklahoma on a couple of acres overlooking a lake. It was here, fifteen years ago, that I pleaded with the universe to send someone who could help me kill the copperheads stalking my dogs. The universe delivered the perfect guy. You never know until you ask.
My husband and I share our home with a pack of rescued dogs and cats, who pretty much run the show. One of our dogs, Maggie, is a therapy dog I take to our local nursing home once a month. It’s so gratifying to see the residents’ eyes light up when she walks in.
