It’s me
Over half a century ago, I arrived on the scene, born October 18th at 5:45 in the morning at Charity Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. My mother gave birth to me under hypnosis. She had experienced complications with childbirth on three previous occasions, with one baby being stillborn. So, the mood was tense but cautious, and the problems were already lurking around my arrival.
In addition to my mother experiencing severe pain with me, her blood pressure had risen abnormally high, and the doctors thought it would be too risky to use medication during labor to bring it back down, so they turned to hypnosis.
My older sister and I were talking and laughing about this the other day, discussing whether I could have been hypnotized during the procedure. I don’t know if that’s even possible, but it would certainly explain why I often find myself drifting in and out of states of consciousness when I hear certain words. Needless to say, my arrival in this world definitely started with anxiety, anticipation, and a little intrigue.
Since that auspicious day, I’ve been greeting each day with the same approach as a thrill seeker. Here’s just a glimpse into the things, people, places, situations, and encounters that have helped to shape who I am, as well as what prompted me to start writing on Medium.
