Me in Melbourne

“Sorry, what’s your name again? Is it Louis, Louie or Louise?”

This is the question I’ve been asked hundreds of times especially when I’m introducing myself or ordering a coffee, so to make it simple, I put my preferred name as Louie in the workplace (which is almost the same pronunciation as Luyi). But, the next question comes, “Oh sorry I thought it was a boy — but hello, Louie!”

So, my name is Luyi, and my pronoun is She/Her. As the spelling indicates, I’m from China, and after a few years of study and life in Hong Kong, now I’ve hit my 6th anniversary in Australia!

Pivot in the Early Years

I currently work in the public sector, but to be honest, I would never think of it even one year ago. Life is always changing and as part of it, I can only accept the unexpected and thrive through it. Here is what happened.

When I was in high school, it was so popular to apply to universities in Hong Kong, which was a separate application system from the mainstream one for entering a college/university in mainland China. Affected by this, I was so keen and determined to go to Hong Kong. I made it and started my life in Hong Kong — it was so amazing to be in such a prosperous and busy small city and spend maybe the rest of my life there — at least this was how I thought when I first came there.
