About Me — Marketa J. Zvelebil
Write about yourself…easier said than done. Even though I started on Medium with autobiographical chapters. But that feels different.
What I did and do
Ok — I will try. I am –hahaha — what am I? I am a retired scientist — did research in computational/structural biology within mainly cancer research. Wrote a textbook as well…which taught me to write overall. I love writing and have written some poems that have been published or turned into songs. I also am a passionate photographer with a few published photos. Love animals, nature, travel and all the things that make life good.
Disabled in body not in mind (I hope)
I am also severely disabled and have been since about six years old. Was told I would die, never walk, and other such optimistic predictions. I survived (up to now) walked with crutches, got a black belt in martial arts, played all kinds of sports, broke my leg skiing, nearly drowned sailing…just living really. Now I can’t do all those things, but still do as much as I can.
Where I am from
I am also a refugee, or would that be an ex-refugee? As now I can return to my “home” land. However, I believe that once a refugee always a refugee as it has totally influenced who I am, what I believe, how many languages I speak and where I live. I now live in France, was born in Czechoslovakia, lived in the USA, The Netherlands, and most of my life in the UK.
I live in France now because I am looking after my 95-year-old mother, as well as an 18-year-old cat (who came with me from London) and an 8-year-old dog who had a horrible start to life.
Writing
I write about my life, thoughts on general life but also life as a disabled person. I also love writing science-fiction and may in future add some of that here. Sometimes I wrote poetry.
So that’s a bit about me…I am sorry it’s not more — but if you are interested in more there are already chapters on my Medium about my life up to University time in London, UK.
