About Me — Matt Spengler

I have no idea what I’m doing

The Basics

I’m Matt, and no, the subtitle wasn’t a mistake. I literally have no idea what I’m doing.

I have a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Quinnipiac University and a Masters degree in Government from Johns Hopkins University. I thought it would be easy to find a job after I finished graduate school, but no one would hire me — and I mean no one.

There are too many paths out there and eventually, I ended up back where I started — not having the slightest idea of what I should do.

So I started writing.

I guess I always enjoyed writing to some extent, but I didn’t realize that I would enjoy it this much, and I especially didn't realize that people would value my writing as well. I’m a naturally curious person, so this platform gives me an excuse to research things that I can transform into an article and allows my mind to be as creative as possible.

My Writing

I’m not sure how many people actually enjoy politics.

Even though I have a degree in Government, I don’t really like domestic politics at all. I think it’s boring. But somewhere along the way, I was told that I have a unique perspective on certain topics that impact people’s daily lives. My main areas of study in graduate school was on Eastern European geopolitics and protest movements, which are super interesting to me but are understandably niche topics. You can skip those articles if I publish them, I won’t be offended.

My main goal when I’m writing is to take some political topics that we might find boring and tackle them from an angle that makes it more compelling. It doesn't alway work. I want my writing to be thought-provoking, but also for the reader to come away with something that they might not have known before reading the article. I take the information that I put into these articles very seriously because I want the reader to feel comfortable knowing that the information they got was accurate. You can get inaccurate information a lot of other places.

I like so many more things beyond just the political realm, though. I love to explore culture and social justice issues, which I try to analyze using my educational background and life experiences. If I can use my articles to teach one person one thing, then it’s worth it.

Writer on current affairs & politics. I have a Masters degree in government from Johns Hopkins.
