Let me start by saying this:

I am 1-month Medium old since this article was published — with 10 published stories. Why does that feel like an accomplishment? All my stories are free and I don’t qualify for the MPP (Medium Partner Program) — because I’m a South African.

Well, I chose to celebrate the small things, even overcoming the fear of posting my first story on Medium.

I wrote about it here:

I’m a born and bred South African, who has worked in retail for four years and wrote short stories in primary and high school — which, unfortunately, a lot of them had been disposed of due to my “not good enough” standards based on feelings.

Even though I’ve dominant introvert features, I still consider myself an ambivert — something I’ve been consistent with all my twenty-five years of existence.

My writing consists of everyday experiences, exploring self, and whatever comes to mind. If you pay close attention, “Soweto” and “Johannesburg” are places in South Africa that pop out a lot in my stories. These are real places I’ve lived in — and I’m still living in.

A round of applause to your tour guide. I deliver real experiences and stories of these places. No matter what the news or credible sources tell you about them, specifically “Soweto” — which has the negative stereotype of a high crime rate, remember that people still live there and things have changed.

Try to book a flight to one of our attractions: Soweto towers. You won’t find littered streets, young thugs walking around with guns — ready to mug anyone who enters Soweto. No, no…no.

Remember, there is crime everywhere. Don’t forget that.

By the way, I first came to Medium to write for fun and have organic conversations. As time passed, I realized the importance of monetizing your writing and turning it into a career.

What blew my mind was when I found out that you can turn your medium stories into a book!

If I’m not falling in love with new anime, you can find me watching parkour stuff.

Here’s a short clip of when I tried practicing after a long time:

I know what you’re thinking: “oh, that’s what Soweto looks like”.

Wrong.

That video was taken in rural Limpopo when I went there this year for a family visit.

“I’m Mbhango,” holds out hand, “nice meeting you”.
