What’s In A Name
Heavily influenced by my mom’s love for 50’s/60's pop culture and music, my first name comes from the Beatles’ 1966 smash hit Michelle. My Marie is my mom’s linguistic twist on her name, Maria. Most relatives and close friends simply call me Michie (pronounced with the Spanish i that sounds like the long English e and spelled with the ie of my middle name) exactly like the name of this historic Michie Tavern in Virginia established in 1784 near Thomas Jefferson’s home, as shown in this photograph taken by my childhood friend.
What are the chances a historic landmark would don my nickname? Who knew my nickname was so American? Then again, my Cuban history is rather historically American too.
