I am Ms. Love — a writer, a dreamer, and a woman navigating the complexities of mental health. Reading and writing have always been my refuge, offering an escape from the emotional and physical abuse I endured as a child. What I didn’t realize at the time was just how vital writing would become in my life.
A year and a half ago I was attacked by a patient in a mental hospital. That experience completely changed my life. I was forced to quit my job because I could no longer work. A serious concussion and back injury required physical therapy, and I also developed severe social anxiety and PTSD. To make matters worse, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This is what a mid-life crisis truly looks like.
More than anything, I wanted justice for what I had experienced, but I found none. I made formal complaints and contacted dozens of lawyers, but everything fell on deaf ears.
Therapy became my saving grace, along with the proper medication. I learned new coping skills that proved incredibly helpful. While adjusting to my new diagnosis was difficult, adjusting to my new life was even more so.
