Cakes and cookies, I need to start by saying that I don’t like writing about myself. I am a contradictory Leo. I am not a fan of the spotlight. Does having a smidgen of validation and a sprinkle of praise feel good? Sure, a little ice cream goes a long way, but the beauty of writing is that people focus more on my thoughts and feelings than on my perky tush. I have always been drawn to the absurd and surreal, having a childhood more muted in its coloring. Don’t get me wrong, shortbread: I have memories of bountiful birthdays, fun family vacations, and wholesome weekends. It wasn’t Rockwell, but I wouldn’t change a thing except the bullying, figuring out my sexuality, and puberty. I was an absolute garbage pail kid, but the lid popped off, and the acne cleared.

I have always been inspired by the creatively chaotic stories of children being thrown into magical worlds, superheroes going through identity crises, and rabbits and ducks trying to outdo each other’s loony. Though I’m from New York, I grew up in a conservative town, in a small school district with the same people from second grade to senior year. The stagnation was palpable, and anything that came over the rainbow or came across as quirky or different was met with derision. All that time, I remember what Alice said in one of my comfort films, Alice in Wonderland (1951):
