Five years ago in Istanbul, with my then three-year-old boy.

I am a 48-year-old Turkish screenwriter, advertising copywriter, translator, and mother.

I believe anyone can tell totally different yet all true versions of their life stories, depending on where they choose to place the camera. Today I want to write to you about my amazing luck!

I learned to write before I could read.

I have been a writer for as long as I can remember. I was lucky that Turkish is a phonetic language. We are not even taught to spell. As soon as we learn the alphabet, we can say a word and write down the sounds without much trouble.

People said I couldn’t be considered a writer until I could read what I had written. In a few months, I figured that out too. I was four and good to go!

I used to fly most nights in my dreams. When I was six, I wrote my first novel: The Jumpy Wobbly Person. Wobbly could fly by jumping really high. My novel was half a page long, but it was stapled professionally in a cardboard cover. I didn’t…
