About Me — Niloufer Perera
About Me
I’m from Sri Lanka, where I grew up in the historically significant and serene town of Kelaniya. Kelaniya is not just home to the famous Kelaniya Temple, steeped in Buddhist history, but it’s also where my family built our life from the ground up — literally.
When I was about four years old, my parents achieved a remarkable milestone: they hand-built a tiny home made of mud clay with a cajan roof on the first piece of land they purchased. The land bordered the beautiful Kelani River and belonged to St. Theresa’s Church in Kelaniya. Though small and simple, our home held profound meaning for my parents, who married young and worked tirelessly to create a life for us.
The house had no luxuries — firewood for cooking, kerosene lamps for light, and a well for water — but I never felt any lack. Even as my parents faced challenges, their resilience and resourcefulness shielded us from understanding the extent of their sacrifices. Life was rich with experiences: picnics, pilgrimages, and the excitement of moving into a slightly upgraded house with metal “takaran” roofing.
As I grew, I took on the role of a second mother to my two younger sisters, especially my youngest, born 11 years after me. Helping raise them, while my mother worked full-time and my father ran a business, taught me responsibility, compassion, and the value of family bonds.
Turning Hardships Into Strength
My journey wasn’t without its struggles. I was a timid and sensitive child, deeply affected by my mother’s strictness and the pressures of poverty. When I didn’t qualify for free university education, I felt the sting of financial limitations. But these setbacks fueled my determination to support my family and create opportunities for us all.
My life began to transform when I discovered NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) through a workshop at work. I have explained more about what Neuro-linguistic programming is in my article here. It shifted my mindset entirely, teaching me to embrace positivity, focus on the present, and manifest my dreams.
One of my proudest achievements was buying my own home at the age of 24, earning just $13.79 per month at the time. With my mother’s guidance and sheer determination, I made the impossible happen. I also took it upon myself to secure my sisters’ futures, from opening their first savings accounts to celebrating their milestones.
Building a Life of Balance and Fulfillment
In 2002, I married my husband, who has been my rock and partner in every sense. Together, we’ve built not just a life but also a wealth of memories — traveling the world, uplifting our families, and celebrating each other’s dreams.
We were blessed with our amazing daughter, whose talents and grace make us proud every day. She embodies the values of love, determination, and resilience that we’ve cultivated as a family.
