I’m going to start off by being honest because I harbor guilt over it — this post is about 1 month and 1 day late. I had originally intended to write and publish this About Me on my birthday this year, July 11, because I had done something I never imagined I would — get a (near) pixie cut. Actually, I probably always imagined I would, but never that I would do it without hitting some arbitrary goal or the other that I had set for myself. Namely, weight loss goals.

I’m in my mid-30s now and I won’t be lying if I said that it has been my dream to cut my hair this short since I was five. If you’re born to Indian / brown parents, a haircut could be equated to bringing the family public shame if it was anything above the shoulders.

As I grew older and independent, living in a country far away, it became easier to do what I please and to get away with it with my parents. But that was soon replaced by my own self-judgment, borne out of fashion trends and eating disorders, that gave me the impression that being fat and having a pixie cut could never be a match made in heaven. And that that beauty would never be recognized by any beholder, not even my own.
