I like this photo from 2015 for several reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a bit blurry. Yes, I’m at an age when I appreciate a blurry photo of my face. Also, the color composition is nice, with the earth tones on my sweater picked up by the ring design on the periwinkle curtain. And to think, this was a spontaneous last minute photo taken by my mother-in-law, just before she left my house after a family visit!

And there you have the reason for the slight anxiety behind my smile in the photo. No, it wasn’t my mother-in-law. I cropped this from a photo of my entire nuclear family. I was probably worried about the expression on my youngest child’s face and about how much longer he could sit still.

The 2016 presidential election was already on the horizon. We had no idea how big our family’s and our world’s worries would soon become.

But I was born in the mid-1960s, so I’ve never been a stranger to political turmoil. My first memories of that grownup TV show…
