I was sitting at a job interview in front of a dozen people. I was feeling quite nervous. The question came. “Tell us about yourself.” I took a deep breath, and sang, in the best mocking country twang I could manage “Oh folks, is hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way.” The room erupted in laughter. I was hired for the job.
Writing this introduction to the Medium community feels a little bit like that experience. I will try to paint you a picture of who I am. OK, seven pictures.
0–10 years old:
I was born in Chile in 1951 — to two aging parents. I entered the world two and a half months premature. I almost did not make it. My family moved to Spain, then Peru, then Argentina, and finally settled in Chile when I was seven years old. I was a feral child, also: independent, curious, precocious, and artistic.
11–20 years old:
I lost my father when I was thirteen. My mom — 57 years old at the time — was in no position to take care of an active teenage boy, so she sent me to live with my sister in Vancouver…
