“Yeah, you got satin shoes”

“yeah, you got plastic boots”

“Y’all got cocaine eyes”

“Yeah, you got speedfreak jive”

“Can’t you hear me knockin’ on your window?”

This is the start of the best Rolling Stones song ever, and if I could, I would play this every day at least once on all the radios in the world. The song is Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.

Hi everyone, I’m Rory from a small hamlet called London, in the South of England. I just started university up north, in Newcastle. I am still acclimatizing to the freezing conditions and how genuinely nice Geordies are, Geordies are people from Newcastle.

My family has always lived in London, my Dad and Mum are the hardest working people I know, my brother is the most stubborn person I know and our dog is the laziest person I know. We love the outdoors, walking, and adventure. As a family we go walking in the Lake District every year, we have trekked the Grand Canyon, scuba-dived in Egypt, and Thailand.

My hobbies and interests are mostly music, movies, and sports-related. Since the time my dad played Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac in the car and at home, classic rock holds a special place in my heart. I have played rugby since a young age and still do at university, I also ski, sail, and scuba dive. I love the ocean. Star Wars is the best and so is Tarantino. You will never walk alone!

If I were to describe my personality I would say, I am an optimist who is extroverted around the right people, secretly compassionate, loyal to the people I love, and lighthearted in humor.

Before university, I took a year out and bartended in cocktail bars in London. If your favorite cocktail is an espresso martini you are not allowed to keep reading. I quickly fell in love with the chaotic nature of bartending. In my bartending career, I have been hit with a broom, messed up many Bloody Marys and shot a firework at my manager (nobody was hurt). Somehow I wasn’t fired.

With the money from bartending, I traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Portugal, and Paris. Traveling before university was the best decision I have ever made.

My first holiday away from my parents was backpacking for 4 months through East Africa, at 18. It was no holiday. A lot of things went well and a lot of things went wrong.

I crashed a motorcycle and spent 3 days in a Kenyan hospital, nearly got arrested in Namibia for trespassing and had to fight off baboons.

I learnt a-lot, my perception of the world changed. my eyes were opened to how unique every person’s life is and how the world actually is. Backpacking also gave me confidence with being independent.

I have always loved writing because it gives you freedom to express yourself and it is therapeutic. Throughout my life I have struggled with a mental battle most lads my age wouldn’t understand and Medium gives me a platform to discover myself and my voice, I am grateful for this.

A little fun fact I learnt in my first term at University.

Fun Fact- Geordie girls smear Deep Heat* all over their body when they go out, so that they don’t freeze to death in their short skirts.

*Deep Heat is a pain relief cream, when applied it causes a burning sensation on the skin, warming you up.

Looking forward to grow my writing career on this brilliant platform!
Thank you for reading!
