About Me — Ruby Noir
Hopefully, this is the last draft but my life keeps changing.
The first time I wrote an About Me piece, it was under my real name.
Then… I changed my name and wrote a new one explaining the change.
Ruby Noir was originally created to make it so my coworkers couldn’t find my writing through a Google search.
I don’t write about anything that could get me in trouble with my job but I do often use Medium as catharsis and write about things that I’ve been through. My past is littered with trauma and it’s just not really something I want to be open to my workplace.
And yeah, that actually happened. I had my past used as conversational gossip at a workplace and when you’ve been through what I have — you tend to want to be the person that decides who knows that story. It’s cathartic to write it to strangers. It’s a hostile work environment when people are talking about the abuse and torture you endured through the childhood you never had.
So that’s how Ruby Noir was born. Over time, she’s become something of an alter ego for me. She has her own photos. Many of them are digitally altered by a friend of mine. She puts Ruby in some creepy places, makes her a ghost, covers her in blood, wraps her chains — all kinds of dark things.
