Have you ever chosen a career because of what you disliked rather than what you loved? I did, and it led me on a fascinating journey, let’s begin the story :)

Hello there 👋
my name is Sarah Ghanem and I’m a mother of two lovely children, I’m a software engineer, freelancer, and writer.
it is very strange when someone asks you about yourself or asks you to tell me more about yourself, your mind freezes for 10 seconds and you don’t know what to say who am I, and where to start.
so let’s start from the very beginning.

My Childhood
I was born in 1990, I am of the Millennial generation.
I’m from Egypt and yes it is the country of pyramids but also we have a lot of amazing things, we have the Nile, we have the Mediterranean Sea, we have the Red Sea and we have Luxor city that has one-third of the world’s ancient monuments.

My childhood was very calm, I was a quiet girl who loved to study and play with her dolls.
I have only one brother who is younger than me.
and in high school, I was excellent in math and had high grades so that’s why all my teachers said to me, it’s time to join the Faculty of Engineering, and that’s what I did.

How I Become a Software Engineer
It is so funny when you are in a meeting and people start to talk about why they chose a career like software engineering. Everyone says that they love computers and they love programming and they already love computer games and want to do a lot of applications. Still, when it is your turn, you find yourself saying the true reason, I choose computer system engineering because I hate drawing.
In my first year in the Faculty of Engineering, we called it year 0, because we were not specialized yet and we started to study all subjects from different departments, mechanical departments, electrical departments, and so on.
after this year we decide which department we want to enroll in and specialize in it.
I was very bad at drawing all kinds of mechanical drawings, steel drawing.
I hated this T ruler very much I couldn’t even know how to use it.
When it came time to choose my department, I only had one request: no drawing. That’s how I found myself in Computer and Systems Engineering.
and here I am :)

Joined IBM
after graduation, there was a program at IBM for fresh graduates, and I got accepted, from this point, I started to love programming and computer engineering because it wasn’t just about the theories that I took at college but about real-life experience and how our work reflects in day-to-day business and how we can add impressive values in what we are doing.
not only this I became a programming instructor to teach fresh graduates :D

Travel to Dubai
In 2017 I got married to my husband who is working in Dubai and I moved with him to Dubai where I am based right now, there I started a new journey.
Now I am a LinkedIn Trainer for digital transformation and Intelligent Automation with 26,000+ followers. With a passion for excellence and a commitment to empowering others in their freelancing and family journeys.
I wrote my first book “Code, Kids and Courage: Starting Freelancing While Raising a Family”, which is a guide to any parent who wants to start his freelancing journey and has some work-life balance.

This journey from Egypt to Dubai, from hating rulers to teaching programming, has taught me that the path to success is rarely straight. But it’s the twists and turns that make it truly mine.

you can follow me on Linkedin, and it is my pleasure to connect.
Thanks for reading and see you around Medium.
