I don’t remember the first story I ever read, but I remember the first one that made me want to write.
It wasn’t a masterpiece. Just a line in a dusty secondhand novel, half-torn and forgotten. But something about the way it held a feeling I couldn’t name made me pause. And then copy it down. And then wonder: What if I could write something like that, too?
I’m from the Netherlands, and I grew up surrounded by books that came secondhand and stories told sideways, between chores, bus rides, or long nights. My world was shaped by margins, not headlines. That’s where I found meaning.
For years, I worked behind the scenes: editing, curating, shaping other people’s words. I still love that. But over time, I felt something tugging. A question, maybe. Or a hunger. Not to be louder, but to be present.
Writing on Medium gave me that space. It’s where I stopped overthinking my sentences and started remembering the real reason I write: not for applause, not even for clarity, but for connection.
I write about books. Publishing. The writing life. But I also write about doubt, and timing, and the moments that pass unnoticed until later. I believe stories are how we survive, not just the big…
