Me and my beloved dachshund “Frank”

My journey began 63 years ago in Santa Cruz, California. I was born on Christmas Eve of 1956, and spent the first 13 years of my life living in California — mainly the Salinas and Monterey area.

When I was 13, my dad took a job transfer. We moved to Mercer Island, Washington for a short time. It was while attending North Mercer Junior High School, that I wrote my first “official” story in my creative writing class. I wrote the story through the eyes of an arsonist, who had just set the local J.C.Penney store ablaze. What made me decide on that topic? I’m still not clear on that one, but all I recall is deciding quickly what I was going to write about. I wrote the story at home that evening and presented it to my teacher (Mr. Hibbard) the following day. The piece earned me an “A”, and I was hooked on writing from that day forward.

When I was 15 my dad took yet another job transfer, and we re-located to Anchorage, Alaska. I went to high school and college in Anchorage, had my three sons in Anchorage, and lived there until I was 30 years old. Part of my years in Alaska were spent in the wine and spirits industry, and I learned a crazy amount about fine wines and spirits. The love of wine and the process of winemaking and distilling spirits is still a huge interest of mine today.
