About Me — Siobhan Colgan
Going full circle to re-find my love of writing
It took me a long time to find my way to Medium. Which is weird because I’ve always been a writer.
I started writing “books” with my siblings as central characters before I was ten. I stopped doing that when my mom read one of my efforts involving a teenage boy whose girlfriend was pregnant and he didn’t know how to tell his parents.
She stormed into my older brother’s room and started hollering into his bewildered 15 year-old-face before I had a chance to stop her and explain sheepishly that it was just my latest stab at teenage pulp fiction!
But I continued to write. Stories, articles, journal excerpts.
The writing was “being”. It didn’t mean I was good at it. But it did mean I had a place to go when life felt heavy or hurtful, and conversely when it promised everything too.
I never doubted I would write for a living. And because the writing was familiar and fulfilling, I could play with it in ways that others were too afraid to do.
Failing never bothered me because what’s failing when you’re doing the thing you love?
So I applied to and wrote for newspapers (when they were still a thing!)
