About Me — Spenser Warren
Named after a fictional Private Eye, my writing is how I make my life less private
My Bio
Career Coach| Spiritual Seeker | 10 year HR Pro| Author
Named after a fictional private investigator from Robert B. Parker’s “Spenser” novels and the 1980s television show, Spenser For Hire, it’s no wonder that I came to love reading mystery and thriller novels. I spent my twenties writing and publishing 3 action thriller novels and a novella.
The first few years of my thirties, though, have been all about tremendous change and personal growth. I finally came out as gay at 30. That same year, I called it quits on a near decade long career in the Human Resources field. I then enrolled in a 6 month UX Writing bootcamp, which led to my current position at eBay as a Content Designer.
At 32 years old, I fully love and accept myself for the first time (thanks, therapy). I’ve learned to embrace the art of non-attachment in the dating realm and with other desires in life, thanks to walking down a Buddhist informed spiritual path. I write about what I’ve learned from these experiences here on Medium, Twitter, and just launched a newsletter.
My mission as a writer, and career coach, is to ease suffering and increase happiness. I believe this starts when we love and accept ourselves, can detach from desires, and bring forth our best selves in a loving and compassionate way.
Helping people do all that on a grand scale is an enormous challenge. So I’m starting where I know best: helping people achieve career empowerment by finding their life’s work.
Other than that, I love telling dad jokes, making puns, and transform into a more extroverted introvert when spending time with my friends. I’m an avid meditator, reader, and new vegan who loves creating healthy and tasty dishes at home.
My Background
Growing up in Moline, Illinois (part of the Quad Cities metro area), I wasn’t a star athlete, but I held many talents.
From a young age, I always had a very active imagination. I constantly made up stories in my head, which served me well as a burgeoning young writer. I also loved reading, with the Harry Potter series and other fantasy novels such as the Eragon series serving as sources of inspiration and delight.
I enjoyed playing the piano and violin in elementary and middle school until I regrettably quit both instruments over a desire to be popular (I thought the ‘cool’ kids didn’t play music).
While my hands stopped dancing on the piano keys, they frequently tapped the keyboard as I traded my music skills for writing and editing articles for my middle school and high school newspapers.
I originally thought I wanted to pursue journalism until the meager employment prospects and pay convinced me to start a career in business instead. I attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois while majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources. Because I wanted to make sure I had strong employment prospects after graduation, I focused a lot of my time on studying and taking on multiple HR internships.
Long story short, rising the ranks in the HR field wasn’t as fun as I originally thought it would be.
I left HR behind in October 2021 and became a Content Designer/UX Writer in June 2022.
