About Me — Stephanie S. Diamond
Writer, editor, runner, hiker, traveler, expat, celiac
When I was in college I realized all I really wanted to do was run and read. I wondered how I could be a professional English major forever. I ran cross-country and the long-distance track events. I concentrated in British literature and French films. I didn’t think about marriage or having children. My dream was to be an editor in New York City and to have a beach house with blue hydrangea.
I never moved to New York City. But I’ve continued to run. I also worked in the editorial departments of several nonfiction children’s books publishers and a medical journal (I was a pre-med major before I switched to English). I wrote and published a few children’s books. I’ve edited books on … everything, both fiction and nonfiction. I’ve written blurbs for toy catalogs and all sorts of web content. In order to teach myself self-publishing on Kindle so I could add that kind of consulting to my repertoire, I wrote a romance novel (still available on Kindle and in paperback!)
I also got married and had a child. And I traveled. In college it was no big deal to hop on a Greyhound bus and visit New York City or friends at other colleges in New York and New England. Then I started flying to California. Then I moved to California. It wasn’t part of my plan but I have no regrets.
Now I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve driven across the United States, moving back and forth between New England, California, and Virginia several times. I’ve lived in Burundi, Mali, India, and El Salvador. I’ve traveled all over the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa. I climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, hiked to Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan, and ran the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. I have celiac disease so I pack a lot of my own snacks wherever I go.
Once the pandemic hit I turned my attention toward my child’s education, filling in the gaps that online school weren’t covering. I eventually relented to adopting a pandemic dog, a goofball pit bull mix that I now cannot imagine life without, and I’m training him to run with me. I’m crafty and I used to blog about it and my daughter wants me to submit an application to Making It.
I’m here on Medium to have a place to restart my creative writing habit. I’m toying with some short stories and personal essays. Topics will vary but currently I’m obsessed with running, Rhode Island history, and haunted houses.
I have my beach house with the blue hydrangea.
