About Me — The Wealth Blog
Entrepreneur, Innovator, Nerd, Magician, Writer, Ginger, Coffee-Lover, Finance Freak, Ambitious, Musician & A Good Friend
Hi everyone,
I’m Benjamin Bailey — The ginger with a receding hairline at age 23. Born and raised in the country of taxes, Denmark.
Before you ask “no I do not work at Credit Suisse (big investment bank)” I just participated in an event at Credit Suisse and won the hoodie (the one in the picture) in a quiz they hosted.
Now to the best transition in history.
Family
So my family is a mess, but I guess most of us today have a messy family in some kind of way. Mine consists of my dad, stepmom, two brothers, and my sister. I’m the oldest sibling.
I also have a mom, but she prioritizes a bottle of wine more than spending time with me, so I took a decision when I was 12 → To cut all contact with her. (not seeking any pity here)
That’s my sister, quite cute if you ask me.
And now to one of my favorites if one is allowed to say such a thing about one’s family members. My grandad. I visit my grandad and grandma constantly.
I remember my grandma saying when I was 10 years old “when you become an adult I bet you won’t come here as often”. And I thought “We’ll see”, and guess what, I’m now 23 and my grandparents are some of my best friends. I’m at their house once or twice a week.
Sadly my grandad lost his else perfect sight in both eyes in only two weeks, back in 2018, meaning he can’t see anything anymore. But that doesn’t stop him from quizzing and telling me dad jokes. We are still a dream team.
Fun fact about my grandad: He’s English — That’s why my last name is “Bailey”. Although he’s English we haven’t spoken English that much, which is the reason I’m not fluent as many would else think.
Then we have my dad. I guess it is obvious where I got my receding hairline from. There’s not much to say about him, except for a fun fact.
Fun fact about my dad: He traveled to England in his 20s to become a butler, and he quickly became fixed inventory at Claridge’s (a luxurious hotel in London). He was so good that he was chosen to be Bill Gates’s butler (sounds like a joke, but it’s true). However, Bill Gates never arrived at the hotel due to a crazy snowstorm in the U.S.
That was some of my family members, I’ll stop posting more members now since the article is about me, not them.
What do I do for a living?
I’m a student at the University of Aalborg in Denmark. I just finished my BA in Business economics and administration with the highest possible grade in my bachelor thesis.
I wrote about how SMEs characterize success, and which factors contribute to their success. My method was knocking on doors and delivering surveys, and afterward, I did hypothesis testing using multiple linear regression.
In September I plan to start my master's in Digitalization and Application Development. I’ve never been a tech genius so this is a total gamble and far from anything I’ve ever worked with.
Lifestyle transformation
Being ginger and participating in business competitions for some reason yells “I’m a freak”… one day I realized I’d been living for too long with that reputation, so I chose to change myself.
The way I did it? I chose bodybuilding as a lifestyle, and this is what it yielded.
I had a decent physique at the time, and I was really enjoying life — Or so I thought.
I ended up only eating vegetables and meat and drinking water while swiping on Tinder. I wasn’t partying at all, I just sat home alone and waited for my next match on Tinder.
I became a robot. I had almost programmed my brain to use a specific script every time I had a girl at my place with only one goal in mind.
It was just pure routine, and every match and every gram of fat I lost was boosting my self-confidence. I suddenly felt like I was someone. No longer would people view me as a nerd, but as a human. It was so cool.
Luckily I came to realize that the above-mentioned wasn’t a lifestyle to pursue. I was disgusting, and looking back I’m ashamed.
I chose to go back to being a “nerd” and I switched bodybuilding with running. In reality, I would rather be able to run and play sports with friends and family than I will walk around with big muscles.
So that’s who I am now. A nerd with red hair, and average-sized muscles who loves running.
Hobbies
I have a lot:
- I love doing magic
- I play guitar
- I constantly try to figure out new business ideas (IDK if that’s a hobby, but it’s fun)
- I write
- Watching comedy (I love Kevin Hart)
- I run
- I read
You can see some of the skills I’ve learned over the years from my hobbies here:
Achievements
I’ve won three Danish championships in competitions in the field of business economics, marketing, and innovation.
Yup, that was just me bragging. In Denmark, we have something called “Janeloven” which is a law stating that “you should never believe you are something” — And if you brag in Denmark you can be sure nobody will talk to you, we simply cannot stand the success of others (small mind culture)
For some reason, we believe that when others become more we become less… I don’t share this mentality, I love seeing other people succeeding. I see it as an opportunity to learn something from those people.
So please brag, brag, and brag as long as you are not being arrogant.
Type of person
I took a personality type test to spice up this article, and this was the outcome:
“I am one of the brave and dreamy types who has a thirst for knowledge. You can recognize me on my willpower and intelligence which often makes me reach my goals.
Many consider me cynical because I assume that people who do not reach their goals are just lazy, uninventive, and doomed to a mediocre life. I have no patience when it comes to frivolity, distractions, and gossip.
The status quo and the conventional thinking and wisdom that abound in our society are not something I blindly follow — on the contrary, I enjoy exploring and forming my own truth rather than being bound to an ignorant worldview.
You never see me being afraid to break society’s underlying rules to prove otherwise, I enjoy it.
Unfortunately, I am not a warm and loving person. I prioritize rationality and success over politeness and coziness. Give me truth and depth when we talk together — I can not overcome more small talks, it’s a waste of my time. It’s not because I’m evil, I’m just trying to be honest.”
Medium Journey
I started on Medium on the 6th of May 2022. It was just like any other day, I was surfing the internet to find a platform, where I could share my thoughts and ideas — Boom, out of nowhere Medium came up. I’d never heard of it before, but I chose to give it a shot.
What started like fun, became an obsession. Now I cannot go a day without writing, I simply love it too much.
And the whole community here on Medium is awesome 99% are positive comments or ways to improve my content, that’s unbelievable… I’ve no idea where else you’ll find such a community.
Goals
I think many have a specific number of followers or a minimum amount of earnings as their goal. Not me, my goal is to get my overall read ratio up to 40% (currently at 33%), which in my opinion indicates that I’m getting better at providing value and my writing improves. Of course, the followers and the earnings will follow as well, but a read ratio of 40% is my number 1 goal.
