About Me — Unnati Trivedi
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” — Helen Keller
Hi, my name is Unnati (pronounced as Oun-na-tea) and my pronouns are “she/her”. I am an engineer by certification, and a storyteller by heart.
A staunch believer of the law of attraction, I constantly manifest positive consequences in my life. When I am not working, I am usually found with a book in my hand.
This article took the longest to manifest as my least favourite question in an interview is “tell me about yourself”, and it’s not because I think I am not interesting, or competent to go on and on about. But because I feel there is no right or wrong answer to this question, and I find that intimidating. Being someone who is very analytical, I needed logical reasoning to back what I think about myself.
So, I took a personality test to confirm what I think about myself and what it says about my character. To my surprise, according to 16Personalities, I have the same personality trait as my inspiration, Barack Obama. This is the Protagonist personality under the Diplomat classification.
Now, we all know a protagonist is the hero of their own story. And I believe that I have the power to shape how my story proceeds. And, this article is just the first half of my story or in terms of referencing a movie, it’s the half before the interval.
The Beginning (1995–2012) -
I was born to two beautiful souls in Chennai, India, on a summerly morning on the 6th of April, 1995. I spent my early formative years in a small town in Gujarat before moving back to Chennai. Ever since I was small, I always questioned gender inequality that happened within my family where the boys got preferential treatment over the girls, which is where my feminist roots stem from. My family noted me as quite the entrepreneur when I was just 3 because I would charge my grandparents $2 if they wanted me to give them a head massage.
This is in line with my Protagonist trait of being passionate about making a difference. I always knew I wanted to be an engineer because in Indian households, there are only two career options, either doctor or engineer and early on itself blood made me squeamish, so engineering it was. I was always competitive and so I worked hard in getting good grades in school. I always wanted to make a difference globally, and since I was 10, I volunteered in different organisations that helped people.
The Middle (2013-Present) -
In 2013, I started my undergrad program in Computer Science and Engineering at Anna University. While pursuing my undergrad, I participated in extracurricular activities, including being a part of a student-run organization called AIESEC. I ended up working for the organisation for 3 years and went on to take a leadership role in year 2. The role was VP Marketing and it included managing a team of 10 other volunteers and promoting various products of AIESEC in Chennai. AIESEC’s mission was “peace and fulfilment of humankind’s potential”, and this was achieved by exchange programs that involved sending young people to another country or bringing some to Indian to volunteer in different organisations.
Post completing my undergrad, I worked for a year at Digitally Inspired Media as a Content Specialist. One of my highlights from this job role was winning regional accolades for a campaign that I ran for an edible oil brand called Gold Winner. Read more about the campaign on Ads of the World.
While I was working for the advertising firm, my sister and I started a Pop Up Kitchen inspired by Airbnb, where people could visit our home to eat homemade traditional food sit-down buffet style. We had over 300 customers in 4 such events that we ran before I moved to Canada. We were also featured in Hindu and Indian Express newspapers because of the novelty of the idea.
In 2018, I started my Master’s in Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation program at McMaster University, Canada. I also worked part-time as a Customer Service Representative at Scotiabank while studying at university. Currently, I am a Product Specialist at SurveyMonkey.
