About Me — Zachary Seda

Storytelling is sort of a passion of mine.

This introvert grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and still lives around the area today. It’s a nice place to live, besides the winter weather. I would say fall is my favorite season. Not too warm and not too cold, for the most part. 72 degrees being perfect.

When I was in college, I wasn’t in any writing programs or seeking to be a journalist. Actually, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do career-wise. Eventually, while at community college for my first 2 years, I settled on business, perhaps looking into management one day. After graduating from Illinois State with a Business degree, I instead found myself working technical jobs, currently as a database analyst.

When it comes to hobbies of mine, I’ve tried out many growing up. Most didn’t last long except for reading, writing and playing video games. Playing games with friends has always been fun for me, but I enjoyed single player games the most, specifically role playing games. That along with reading helped spawn my interest into writing, mainly due to the fact that they all had something in common, storytelling.

My writing journey

One of the first platforms I got started on was Wattpad. At the time I used it, I only enjoyed reading stories others made, always thinking about creating my own for the site. It intrigued me being able to publish my own work, so I did just that.

Currently, I only have a small number of short stories on Wattpad. I didn’t write everyday, and at the time I wasn’t even sure I wanted to pursue writing or not. It was just a hobby.

I slowed down on writing for a while. I had been working on a novel, my first one. In fact, it was supposed to be a series, but I didn’t like how it was going. I value quality over quantity, and if I’m not happy with my work, I won’t share it until I am. The novel I wrote was maybe a little too ambitious for me coming from only writing short stories prior. Becoming frustrated, I archived the novel for the time being looking to work on other stories instead, but was pretty unmotivated after that. Writing slowed down and I focused on my other hobbies for a while.

It wasn’t until 2020 when I started to really get back into writing again, and I’m definitely doing much better now. I’ve written several new short stories, some of which I submitted to contests or magazines. I started 2 new novels that I’m still working on, hoping to have the first one out by next year. On top of that, and if I ever find the time, I’m looking to create an Interactive Fiction story, something I’ve done in the past and loved.

I like to writing science fiction and fantasy, but I’ve also dabbled in many other genres as well. The most recent one being horror. I think above all with my writing, the genre doesn’t matter that much to me. If I have a story to tell, I’ll write it. But not only write it, share it.

Finding Medium

With my renewed interest in writing, I wanted to see myself grow as a writer. It wasn’t simply just a hobby to me anymore, but more of my passion. I wanted to publish novels, post short stories, and interact with people who enjoyed reading my work. Posting to Wattpad was nice, but I wasn’t getting the kind of interaction I had hoped for there. I wanted to find a different platform that I felt would have better opportunities for myself. Only recently did I learn about Medium, something I’ve heard about in passing but never really checked out. Upon my own investigation of the site, I loved it.

Since signing up an account with Medium, I’ve started publishing short stories to the site, both old and new. I’ve been able to talk with other writers, as well as get accepted into publications. So far, in just a week of being on the platform, I can tell I’m really going to enjoy being here.

I can’t wait to see where my writing goes. I have a lot of ideas ready to be explored, and Medium and the community around it is where I want to share those ideas. I hope to continue publishing my short stories here as well as engage with the writing community. My ultimate goal is to further myself as a writer.

I also want to thank About Me Stories and Quy Ma for asking me to create a story about myself. While I’m not one for talking about myself, it’s been nice to look back on how I got here.

If you are interesting in checking out my work, here are a few recently posted stories:
