About Me — Yasmin
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. -Oscar Wilde
As far as I remember, I was just 8 years old when I first wrote a story. It was a very short and simple story, and the main character was based on myself (of course!).
And do you know what was my motivation for writing that story?
It was my anger and sadness and the desire to run away from home, just to make my parents feel bad for hurting me. (I can’t be the only kid who wanted to run away, right?)
After I wrote the story, I showed it to my parents, and they smiled at each other (realizing why I wrote the story). They praised me. It made me a little embarrassed. But I also felt proud of myself.
My Nana (grandfather), who passed away 6 years ago (may God bless his beautiful soul), read the story (my mother most likely showed it to him). He was so proud that I can’t even express it in words. He showed it to all his friends and made me rewrite it several times so he could send copies to them.
This is one of the most distinct and the best memories from my childhood, and my nana’s reaction left a lasting impression on me. Ever since then, I’ve automatically started associating writing with positivity and a way to express my true self.
