Have you ever wished you were somebody different? I have, and I’m sure it’s not just a wish harbored by fools. I think a lot of much smarter people want to be someone else too. When I imagine what it would actually be like to be the person I want to be, am I just partaking in more delusional self-aggrandizement? I’m not sure I am.

Doesn’t every teenager at some stage in their development wish they looked like so and so, or were as confident as somebody else, or could do a certain activity as well as another person? We all want to be different. I’m not talking about wearing black nail varnish, getting a lopsided haircut, lots of tattoos, and ill-fitting clothes in an attempt to show how unique we are. I’m talking about wanting to be anything but what you already are.

It wouldn’t be hard to convince me I’m thinking these things because what I already am is a despicable fool with no moral fiber; and what sort of person would want to be like that? Not me! If you did say those things to me, I might just sit quietly nodding and agree with you. Admitting that surprises me, but I’m realizing a lot about myself that I’d never taken notice of.
