How I Went From Hardcore Missionary to Liberal Agnostic
The power of an echo chamber
I was the most “Christian” Christian you could find. I was a depressed teenager who stumbled into a church youth group and bent the knee to Jesus at 15.
Read the Bible cover to cover at least a dozen times. Argued with atheists and converted them.
Prayed at the flagpole of my high school even when kids tossed rocks at me.
Became a missionary in places like Nepal and China, preaching the gospel, praying for the dead to rise (sadly failed to see results), trying to cast out demons (again… results), and setting up illegal seminaries in restricted countries.
For twenty years of my life, I was a conservative evangelical Christian who would have supported the current Christian Nationalism in the US.
Now, I’m agnostic. I make no claims about if the supernatural exists, nor do I believe anyone can (with empirical evidence, at least). There’s a part of me that wants to believe in God and maybe does, but I am not convinced anyone knows anything about that entity (entities) if they even exist.
My political beliefs have also changed from a raging conservatism to a more liberal understanding.
