I Quit The Tech Industry After 6 Months

The TikTok tech girlies aren’t telling you everything and what they’re leaving out… it’s the stuff that will break you.

TikTok is abuzz with “breaking into tech” and salaries that are absolutely mindboggling for non-technical positions in the field. The hashtags #workintech and #workingintech have a combined over 70 million views and counting.

But, those videos aren’t telling the whole story. Some of them are even HR recruiters themselves.

As I saw these videos gain more and more traction, the ones that explained the cons of the industry got fewer views and more negative comments.

So, I’m telling my story.

I made it six months in tech before I quit. I felt completely broken by the end of it.

My health was completely shot in every way, emotional, mental, and even physical.

I started working for a reputable cybersecurity tech firm. I had some decent knowledge in the field due to working with a research team in my graduate degree.

I was in a marketing position, not a technical role.

In the interview process, I was told that the team was established and full of “Rockstars” (which should have been my first clue). I asked questions focusing on work-life balance since that was my…
