Lefties and Me
Going Left (and further left)
The lefties club is small. Psychology Today says it’s between 9.3% and 18.1% of the world population and settles in at a likely 10.6%. That means in 2020, there were eight hundred-twenty-seven-million lefties in the world.
Seems like a lot, but in a world of over eight billion people, it’s not.
What am I? A little of both.
I shoot baskets lefty. I kick lefty. I can bat either way (not well from either side). I bowl lefty. I can eat with either hand. I shave lefty. I brush my teeth righty. My left eye is dominant.
When I played golf, I was a righty, but thought of switching to lefty. Couldn’t hurt. The left side couldn’t have been any worse than what the right side gave me on the course.
I write righty but I’ve always thought that was because of some edict in first grade that I had to write righty. When I drive with one hand on the wheel, it’s the left one. Not sure I’d trust the right one to handle the Tesla.
I play guitar righty but I’ve always thought that’s because the left hand does all the work on the fretboard. I mostly reach for things with my left hand.
