I write about sustainable business and I’m here to share my learning journey with you.
I turned 27 last week.
For over 10 years, I have been learning about how our current society and economic system are ruining the planet.
And for 10 years, I have been trying to work out what I can do to stop it.
I studied engineering at university of which some of my modules were sustainability related (ish). But most of the knowledge I have gained has been through self-education. Books, podcasts, speaking to people, social media, training courses and the like.
The goal: understand where can I dedicate my effort for maximum amplification of planetary impact.
I now work for a waste management company. Every day, I genuinely try my best to do “the right thing”. But organizations have complex priorities, especially when interwoven with the fabric of growth and profits. Let alone in the context of an industry that operates in a globlised network. As most of them do these days.
I have spoken to many determined young professionals, so passionate about creating a sustainable society, who also want to do “the right thing”. They look for advice about a career in sustainability. Many of them starting out, some of them switching.
The sad thing is that, with all the information they are bombarded with, a haze sits over “the right thing”. They can broadly see its outline (cutting down the rainforest = bad, diversity = good), but they are not equipped with the knowledge or approach to see the finer details, to understand the nuance.
2 things are important when it comes to explaining the concepts of sustainable business:
- Clarity
— explaining the jargon without using jargon (or referencing jargon explainers where relevant!)
2. Simplicity
— 1 topic at a time, with frameworks, images, data and evidence to support understanding
These are the principles with which I will try to write.
I don’t think there is an answer to my goal. Life is a constant learning journey.
I am here to share my journey with you.
