My Cousin Just Taught Me a Valuable Lesson

How dare she learn such a valuable life lesson before I caught on? Have I not been paying attention?

The three of us, my two cousins and I, attend church service every Sunday “together.” Actually, they are in different places in New York, and I’m in North Carolina, but thanks to “Zoom,” we can attend a church that isn’t in the same city as any of us.

After the service, there are “chat rooms” set up, and my two cousins and I are in one together. They are sisters, and one is older than I am, and the other is younger. Maybe the older cousin already knew this secret to life but just hadn’t thought to share it with me.

None of the three of us are computer wizards, and once in a while it takes a little time before we all have our audio and video adjusted so we can converse. Last Sunday, I unmuted myself and hit my video button to turn on my camera and — nothing. I was invisible. My screen was blank.

I did everything I could think of — looked at every setting, pushed every button I dared to — nothing. I was no longer television. I had somehow become radio.

Normally, I’d say, “Who cares? They’ve seen me before,” but last Sunday was my first opportunity to show off my new smile. It was very…
