My Three Masters: A Director, a Film, and a Novel
Find Your True Self and Find Your Master
In one of Paulo Coelho’s books, he mentioned the answer of a great Sufi master when asked before dying who his masters were. “The whole existence has been my Master. I have learned from every event that has happened in my life. And I am grateful for all that has happened because out of all that learning I have arrived”. It was a dog, a thief, and a kid whom the master considers being his greatest master.
Since reading this story, I have strived to learn from the world around me and discover my master.
During a Spanish course in Damascus many years ago, an older colleague of mine who was a film director told me that he sometimes went to the cinema without prior reservations when he was tired and let life choose the movie for him. The rationale was that if the movie was bad, you would end up sleeping on a comfortable seat for a few hours without the need to set an alarm (the silence, the noise, darkness, and light will be the organizers) and if it was worth watching, you would have a great time despite being tired. This is so beautiful and special when you fight against the angel of sleeping for something you can not miss following.
