Netflix and No Chill !
When Netflix became my partner and my refuge
When most of my parent group interactions revolve around children’s screen addiction, it seems only fair that I address my own. There’s a thought that has been nagging me and at 11:26 pm, in bed, watching Netflix, I decided to pen it down.
For years, I have been living a routine ( like many of us), rinse and repeat: kid to school, work grind, back to kid duty — homework, projects, the whole nine yards.
Then, finally, the best part: bedtime — a cosy rendezvous with Netflix, accompanied by a soothing cup of chamomile.
Rain or shine, good or bad day, early or late from work, I’d always return home to Netflix. Before I knew it, it had morphed into my dependable, ever-present, digital confidante that never failed to deliver, offering peace and entertainment in equal measure, through the warm glow of the screen.
For many, myself included, Netflix has emerged as a steadfast companion, refuge, and ever-present getaway from the mundane routine.
It has mastered the art of seduction. With its vast library of content tailored to our mood and whim, it’s like having my genie. It doesn’t nag or judge, It simply serves up episode after episode, reliably delivering the dopamine hit we crave.
And the best part? It demands nothing more than a periodic subscription fee, a small price to pay for the endless distraction it offers.
As I sink deeper into the cushions and mattress of my bed, hypnotised by the charm of endless streaming, I can’t help but wonder: am I sacrificing genuine human connection for the convenience of digital companionship?
While Netflix may excel at filling the void left by the demands of daily life, can it truly replace the nuances of face-to-face interaction, the conversation, the arguments and discussions, and the shared laughter and tears, that bind us together as human beings?
It’s a humbling thought, to realize that I may be settling for a replica of intimacy, a pixelated substitute for the messy yet beautiful complexity of real relationships.
Perhaps it’s time to look beyond the warm glow of the screen. To venture out into the world with fresh eyes and an open heart, ready to embrace the unpredictable, gloriously imperfect human connections.
But for now, as I sip my chamomile tea and scroll through the endless carousel of Netflix releases, I’ll allow myself this moment of respite, from the demands of reality.
