Most people my age were settling down, but I chose to chase a dream that meant leaving everything behind.
I worked as an administrative assistant for 8 years. In 2020, I decided to quit my job and move abroad to explore myself. However, when the pandemic hit, I couldn’t travel until 2022.
In many Asian cultures, turning 30 often means big life changes are frowned upon. People kept asking me,
“Why did you decide to quit your job?”
“Why did you decide to move abroad?”
“Why did you decide to chase your dream?”
At that moment, I knew that if I didn’t follow my heart, I would regret it in the future. So, I stepped out of my comfort zone and started living independently.
I loved the first place I rented. The landlord was kind, the rent was reasonable, and it was conveniently located near a train stop.
I began looking for a job. I remember having only $29 left after three months. I was nervous about how I would survive the coming months.
I applied for as many positions as I could and was willing to take any entry-level job just to get a paycheck.
Eventually, I was lucky and found a job quickly.
I could have asked my parents for help, but I didn’t want to.
I wanted to test my potential and see how I would survive and react in a new environment.
Looking back, that overseas experience taught me that life isn’t easy, but it gave me the courage to face reality and chase my dreams.
