School Yearbooks: A Place for Personal Signatures
For ten years, we lived in the Mojave Desert in California. The focal point of our living room was a tall Louis 14th armoire with heavy mirrored doors.
So often when we leave the house we find a mirror, and take one last look to make sure hair is in place and shirt tucked. It is a moment to give ourselves an affirming nod. Yes! Looking good!
In her graduating year, our daughter had the privilege of writing the introduction to the school yearbook which was called Reflections.
She used the story of the mirrored armoire, giving her classmates the opportunity to take “One Last Look”, reflecting on the happenings of the year.
That was the formal part of the book. What happens with school yearbooks is, they become a place for personal signatures, well wishes, and expressions of sentiments. Those sentiments are often addressed to the recipient using his or her nickname rather than the person’s given name. It signifies relationship.
