About Me — Nostalgia Journaling

The world seemed clearer, after writing everything down, when you were a teenager.

Maybe you might have kept a diary hidden under your bed or in your closet.

You may have stopped using a diary once you reached adulthood, but the benefits still apply. Now it’s just called journaling.

When you are 20, you cannot remember the details of your childhood. And when you are 60, you cannot always remember the details of your 30s or even 40s.

Sure you can remember the surface-level information, but what about the exact small details that make your life YOURS?

So I’m asking myself, what if I can’t remember small tiny details of my life one day that made me wonder about the world, that made me smile, or the feeling I had on my trip to Italy while eating pasta?

It is the method that will force you to find joy and sweetness in everything, however small.

And that’s where my favorite method of journaling comes as a rescue. A way that records your life as a diary, for you to read anytime you want.

Beyond my much-needed cup of coffee, my mornings include reading (and here’s the cliché) Journaling.

Benefits of journaling:

  • To manage anxiety or fears and concerns
  • Reduce stress
  • Cope with depression
  • Staying focused on your goals — If you have goals that you’re trying to reach, journaling can help you to monitor your progress and work. When you write down what you’re trying to accomplish, try to make it as visible as possible.
  • A powerful tool for learning and development — It can boost your memory and helps to keep your brain active.
  • Writing memories down can also ensure that they remain clear for years to come, and don’t get lost over time.

Research suggests that journaling is also good for your overall health

A study found that 76% of adults who wrote down their feelings for 20 minutes a day, on the 11th day, 76 percent of the group that did expressive writing had fully healed as compared with 42 percent of the control group.

Journaling for Nostalgia

What makes life exciting for me, is the differences in our perceptions that our experiences are unique to ourselves.

We look at the same sun but it makes us all feel differently. We read the same books but interpret them differently.

So this is the part where all these differences are what makes you — YOU!

You are unique and different from me or anybody else in this world.

That’s why you should write about the things that make you smile, make you sad, or even angry. Write everything down that comes into your mind, how you have felt on a certain day or in a very difficult moment.

The best moments for journaling is in the morning, so you can include this in your morning routine and before you go to bed.

It could be everything that comes to your mind, to get aware of your thoughts. It can also be how a person made you feel today or how you felt about the coffee smell in the morning.

The point here is so you can record details and thoughts of your life, that matter to you.

I love reading Auto-Biographies, especially from very inspiring people. They inspire me, and they bring me back on track when I have lost myself on busy days.

I always wondered (since I was a child): What would my auto-biography be like? The next minute I was always like: ok you don’t have a special life, and someone wants to write an autobiography of you.

But today I think differently. I know that we all have something special in our lives for the world to share. For me, it became very important to acknowledge what happens in our day-to-day life, and let life pass by.

Time goes by so quickly, and sometimes we even forget who we are.

You will be amazed to read the old entries in your journal. You will be astonished to see how far you have become.

Day by day nothing changes — but when you look back, everything is different!

These days all of us are so afraid of standing out, of being different. We copy-paste other beliefs, opinions, and choices. That’s what you need to avoid while journaling.

Your journal should be YOURS. This should be just you.

Don’t lie to yourself. No matter what you thought or how you felt at that moment, even if you did something really bad you need to write everything in the truest nature.

  • No Perfection
  • No shame

On some days you will cry, some days you will dance.

But it is important to remember all of those days one day.

But even if you have set the journaling part for your morning or evening routine, don’t just wait to journal only those two times.

As soon as you have an idea or a certain thought write it down.

Journal to keep your story alive.
