CICADA INVASION
The Cicada Invasion Begins
Those little buggers are not fun
In 2004, we purchased and moved into our home in Maryland. I remember spending all day in the car, getting to the new house and unpacking the few necessities we had with us. I wanted to take a walk and explore the new neighborhood with our four-year-old Daughter.
We had no idea we were at the tail end of an invasion of the noisy kind as the 17-year Brood X cicadas had just finished their big coming-out party. While walking, she picked up a cicada off the sidewalk. Its monstrous buggy eyes looked back at me but I didn’t dare show fear to my little girl.
I wanted her to appreciate nature!
I had seen cicadas in Ohio, of course, they were about the size of a nickel and would leave cool shells on trees. I could never imagine these huge bug-eyed monsters. They were almost two inches long, the size of a hummingbird. And they were everywhere. I had never seen anything like this invasion of the Brood X generation.
