The simple life of a complex person
Here is where I am today on my journey.
This is where I began my journey in my 20s.
In 1972 I met a spiritual teacher named Vincent Collura. He was a barber in the small Catskill Village of South Fallsburg. Though I had studied Alan Watts, Krishnamurti, and Ram Das, it was Vincent who got me focused on meditation, mindfulness, and mysticism.
I would have dinner every evening with Vincent and his various followers and students and we would discuss anything and everything that related to personal growth. Often we would take long walks early in the morning through the local woods, and Vincent would point out various plants that could be used as food, or medicine. He would point out Ground (Creeping) Ivy, Dandelion, Cleavers, Chickweed, Red Sumac, and many others.
Despite his vast knowledge of plants, his teaching was more focused on meditation, and inner work. Those students, including myself who seemed to have…
