Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered why you don’t quite fit into the story you’ve been told?

This question has been a constant in my life. It’s the question that’s guided me through moments of self-discovery, family revelations, and a journey that’s still ongoing.

Early Questions

When I was a kid, maybe seven or eight, I often stayed with my aunt while my parents worked. Even then, I had questions about my identity. My skin was lighter than most of the kids in my black neighborhood, and I couldn’t help but wonder why.

One day, I asked my aunt about it. I remember her laughing at first, like I’d asked a silly question. “Boy,” she said, “you don’t know your dad is a white man who lives in Missouri? And he’s got money too!” She was almost joking, but then her tone changed.

She got serious, shaking her head. “I can’t believe they’ve never told you, "she said. Later, she confronted my parents, upset that they had kept this secret from me.

I didn’t fully understand the weight of her words, but something shifted in me. My stepdad didn't respond kindly when I mentioned it. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I know it wasn’t a…
