PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN

I laugh about it now. I should’ve never graduated from high school. I had a one-track mind and all I ever wanted since I was ten years old was to become a fashion designer. Thankfully my teachers realized that I wasn’t stupid, dim-witted or unteachable. Just stubbornly focused on my craft. So they gave me passing grades even when I didn’t deserve them.

Every year girls would hire me to design their prom gown so my art teacher encouraged me to apply to Parsons School of Design in New York to study fashion. I was intrigued enough to send for an application and fill out the necessary paperwork but full of reservations and doubt.

Parsons had the top fashion design program in the country then and my grades were borderline dismal. I didn’t think I stood a chance in hell. But I did okay on the SAT’s (a lot of lucky guesses) and my art and design work impressed them because guess what? I was accepted.

That September my mother and I boarded an Amtrak train headed for the Big Apple. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep.
