A mother is the foundation upon which a child builds their life. She is the first person a child learns to trust, the one who offers unconditional love and protection no matter what the world throws at them. A mother is supposed to be a sanctuary, a safe harbor in the storm of life. From the moment a child is born, they rely on their mother for everything nourishment, care, and affection. As they grow, they continue to depend on her for guidance, understanding, and friendship. The bond between a mother and her child is one of the most profound connections in the world. It is a bond that, when nurtured, can weather any storm. A mother’s love should be a constant, something that a child can always count on, no matter what.

But what happens when that bond is broken? What happens when the one person who is supposed to be your greatest ally becomes distant, preoccupied, or even neglectful? Living in a toxic environment is already tough enough for a child, but being neglected and abandoned by the very person who is supposed to protect you is the cruelest fate of all.

The Silent Pain of Neglect

My parents were never there to give me the emotional support I desperately needed. I grew up feeling lost, alone, and unwanted. While I had no expectations for my father, I held on to the hope that my mother would be different. I wanted to believe that she would see my pain, that she would step in and be the mother I needed her to be. But she was never there when I needed her most.

I won’t say I don’t love her, or that she’s a bad mother. In many ways, she is a good mother who has endured more than her fair share of suffering. My heart aches for her when I think about how my father cheated on her multiple times, and how he was abusive toward her. She’s been through so much, and for that, I feel sorry for her. But does that excuse her forgetting that she had children who needed her just as much as she needed him?

While she was consumed with trying to fix her marriage, she broke her children. I spent most of my childhood alone, locked in my house, not knowing what to do or who to turn to. Yet, despite the loneliness and pain, I still supported her. I did the household chores while she was out, spying on my father. I took care of my siblings, ensuring they were safe and fed, even though no one was looking out for me. I hoped that maybe one day, she would acknowledge my efforts, that she would see how much I cared for her, how much I tried. But no matter how hard I worked, how much I did for her, she never noticed. She never thanked me. She never cared.

Even now, when she is older and wants to be more involved in my life, it’s not out of love or understanding. It feels more like control. She wants things to go her way. She expects us to obey her every command and include her in every aspect of our lives. But the scars are too deep. I cannot forget what they did to me. I still love her and always will, and I’ll take care of them because they are my parents. But they have lost their eldest daughter, and they don’t even realize it. They don’t know how I truly feel because they never listened.

The Lasting Impact

I understand how hard it is for a woman when her husband cheats on her, abuses her, and makes her feel worthless. I get it. But what did we do to deserve this? What was our fault? We never asked to be born. If you decide to have children knowing you’re in an abusive relationship, why do you then neglect your kids? If a man becomes abusive after having children, why do your children have to suffer for it? Why couldn’t you leave him? Why couldn’t you give up on fixing him and focus on us?

Do you really think he will ever change?

Please, don’t let a child go through what I’ve been through. It’s so painful, and the scars will stay with them for the rest of their life. They will have countless mental struggles, difficulties building relationships, and a life that feels broken in every possible way.

As I reflect on everything, I find myself wishing things had been different. I wish my mother had seen me, truly seen me, and understood how much I needed her. But all I can do now is carry these scars and hope that sharing my story will help others see the importance of being there for their children, no matter the struggles they face. A child's heart is fragile, and once broken, it never heals the same.

Thank you for reading and for allowing me to share this piece of my heart.
