The Psychology of Money

I have a confession to make.

When it comes to money and accumulating wealth, I’m a late bloomer.

For most of my adult life, I believed and acted like money was a dirty, 5-letter word. I didn’t like the mention of it, and I certainly didn’t save it.

And the cause? Daddy issues.

The Hard Knocks of Life

My parents were both born in what was considered one of the poorest countries in the world, Ethiopia. My mother was the oldest of 7. My father, the oldest of 13. With limited resources and many mouths to feed, money was always tight in their households.

Growing up, my father experienced hardship and difficulties to the point that he developed a phobia of poverty. At an early age, he decided to drop out of school and start his first business, selling chickens by the side of the road. One sale became two, two sales became four, and soon he was able to earn enough profit to expand his inventory and increase his revenue.

Eventually, he began to seek opportunities elsewhere and ended up relocating to the capital city of Addis Ababa, where he was able to build a successful business in a short amount of time.
