The Unconsciousness Beginning
This is Aleeza Bashir, a 20-year-old Pakistani girl, currently navigating my way through the fifth semester of BS in English Literature. My entry into the world of letters was a silent, natural evolution. During my school years, I hadn’t yet discovered “Literature,” but there was an undeniable connection with the English language. I vividly remember my teacher saying, “You grasp the nuances of grammar so effortlessly.” Looking back, it was the first spark of a lifelong flame.
Choosing the Path: Love Over Language
I chose English Literature almost unconsciously. My heart doesn’t beat for the “Language” alone — it beats for the “Literature.” I fell in love with the anatomy of characters, the glimpses of history, and the vibrant tapestry of diverse cultuures.Once I stepped into the enchanting world of English classics, there was no turning back.
The Masters Who Shaped My Perspective
I found pieces of myself in the works of many great writers; the ones I mention here are just a few among the many who have influenced me. I was moved by John Milton’s religious intensity and mesmerized by William Shakespeare, the ultimate observer of the human soul. George Orwell’s political satire sharpened my critical thinking, and Virginia Woolf’s “Stream of Consciousness” allowed me to drift within the waves of thought.
The Urdu Heritage
There is another side to my literary identity that flourished within the quiet walls of my home. Watching my sisters engrossed in Urdu digests sparked a passion that led me from the contemporary narratives of Nimra Ahmed to the soulful depths of Hashim Nadeem and the philosophical pinnacle of Bano Qudsia’s Raja Gadh.
Why am I Here
Today, my mind is constantly exploring the depths of the human psyche and the evolving narratives of feminism across cultures. I have joined Medium to bridge these two worlds of mine — English and Urdu — and to share this beautiful literary blend with those who find magic in words in the English language.
